Are you ready to dive deeper into the World of Myrr?

Continuing our journey through the World of Myrr, this week we dive into theĀ A3 The Old Wood & A4 Chasing KyzanĀ double adventure. Crafted by Cawood Publishing,Ā this adventure is designed for characters advancing to levels 4-6 and continues the journey from A1 Wyld Life & A2 Some Enchanted Evening.

If you missed the beginning of the series, here’s a link for your convenience: A1 Wyld Life & A2 Some Enchanted Evening. For those that are curious about where it ultimately leads, you can take a peek at Ā A15 The Hell Gate & A16 Dis Pater’sĀ Palace, but beware of spoilers!

The scenario

After surviving the untamed dangers of Wyld and nearly coming face to face with vampires, the adventurers now face a new task: rescuing three victims who were kidnapped by a necromancer. In A3, the party must travel through a haunted forest, the Old Wood, the oldest forest in Myrr, as the name suggests. This forest is a place full of mystery and darkness, where even the light itself is too afraid to touch it. As if that were not enough, wicked and malicious creatures lurk in the woods, making a careless step potentially your last if you are not careful enough. A3 ends with the phrase

If the players make it through the Old Wood alive, they have succeeded! The Adventures in Myrr continue with A4 Chasing Kyzan.

which I find fun and exciting, as it perfectly captures the essence of the world. Moving on to the second part of this double adventure, A4 progresses from the barren lands to the ghostly, fog-shrouded village of Myrr. For years, the evil Alliance has been abducting innocent victims for the twisted experiments of the necromancer Landis Kyzan. The players will follow the trail left by Kyzan’s nightmare mount, confront the necromancer, and hopefully free some of the missing people from the first part.

Encounters

Set in a treacherous and haunted environment, A3/A4 is filled with various and meaningful encounters, where appearances can often be deceiving. A3 The Old Wood offers a blend of classic monster fights, survival challenges and moral dilemmas, all while navigating a lovely forest with difficult terrain. NPCs are strange and have hidden motives, and deadly creatures stalk the party’s moves, turning this journey into a test of survival and trust. As the characters transition into A4 Chasing Kyzan, the encounters evolve into more strategic challenges, including traps and skill checks that test the party’s thinking, before reaching the final battle. Continuing the animated objects tradition that was introduced in A1/A2 by The Dinner Set of Death, A3/A4 introduces The Broom of Doom. Despite its harmless appearance, it is not just an ordinary broom as it can slam you for 1d8 + 1 bludgeoning damage, providing a fun –and painful- twist to the story’s grim tone. Did I mention anything about the White Riders? I didn’t, but I’ll leave that for you to discover.

Layout & Art

Let us continue with the layout, which is functional and easy to navigate. Encounters, maps and information are separated in a logical order, with white boxes highlighting text intended for the players. Simplicity is the key here, as anything too flashy often overwhelms the game master. Like the previous module, each location, room or area is clearly marked on a map and thoughtfully described, setting the vibe and atmosphere. This design effectively aids the GM, making information accessible and ensuring sessions run smoothly. As for the art, it is mostly simple yet colourful maps, along with black-and-white sketches of NPCs. Some might say it would benefit from more vibrant, full colored illustrations to truly bring the setting to life, and although they might be right, that didn’t bother me at all.

Extras

We get some bonus material included in the module to enhance our experience. New monsters like the Broom of Doom, Forest Witch, and Apprentice are introduced, and the original characters from the Adventures of Myrr campaign make an appearance at the end of the supplement. The MyrrianĀ Calendar and a World map are also provided, adding depth to the setting and making the A series feel truly connected.

Final Thoughts

I find Ā A3 The Old Wood & A4 Chasing Kyzan to be a captivating, dark fairy tale that balances combat, exploration, interactions and problem-solving elements. With a touch of wildness, plenty of danger and great pacing between a dark forest and a ghost town, this double adventure keeps players on the edge of their seats. Would you be up for the challenge and travel through Myrr, or are you afraid of the dark?
